Downgeon Quest is a roguelike RPG that allows you to choose between multiple characters to play, each with their own story. But this isn't entirely a story-driven game, either: it expects you to play carefully, managing resources, and emerging from the dungeon with hard-earned loot to then craft into truly worthy items!
A Rogue-Like Roguelike
A key game mechanic of Downgeon Quest is managing the usage of your lantern. You only have so much fuel, and can't get more easily without leaving the dungeon. You can turn it off and on, but obviously, you want it on to explore, to see enemies coming, and so forth. A large part of the game is learning when and how you can turn off your lantern, to save on its use. Another large problem is crafting items! The crafting system is fun, and intuitive, but it is also your biggest lifeline. Without using the right items, you'll never survive in the dungeon. Each character is different, but they all rely on gear as much as (or more than) their basic abilities.
Are You Tough Enough?
A game with graphics as cartoony as Downgeon Quest's usually isn't as difficult. But the game combines both fantastic charm and a difficulty curve that will keep you playing for a long time if you don't get frustrated. Anyone who likes RPGs, and in particular roguelikes, should give Downgeon Quest, a try.
